1 out of every 5 teenagers leave school in Northern Ireland lacking basic literacy skills. – http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/local-national/northern-ireland/audit-reveals-literacy-shortcomings-29078857.html

A recent audit of schools in Northern Ireland found the above statistic. The United Kingdom as an average usually lies at around 1 out of 5.

By way of response, the comptroller Kieran Donnelly said:

“Regardless of how well the majority of pupils perform, it is also clear from our findings that unacceptably large numbers of pupils are failing to achieve even minimal levels in literacy and numeracy.

“It is vital that our education system does all it can to address underachievement in order to improve the life chances of our young people and to ensure that our economy is well equipped to compete in an increasingly global market place.”

Now let’s get to the real question: how will this change be achieved?

Please share your ideas as a parent, teacher or child. How can we improve our school systems so that children are not able to fall through the cracks?
